Israel’s president taps opposition candidate Eisenkot to form a government, in setback for Netanyahu JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli President Isaac Herzog says he's giving opposition candidate Gadi Eisenkot the first opportunity to form a governing coalition following elections on Oct. 27. Eisenkot, a former military chief, ran as the main challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, leading a bloc of parties seeking to oust Israel’s longest-serving premier. Neither Eisenkot nor Netanyahu won a clear majority in the vote. But in marathon discussions with the president this week, representatives from most of Israel’s main parties recommended Eisenkot be tasked with assembling a new government. UFC's Dana White says he will meet with Trump Monday over offer to be White House press secretary WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — President Donald Trump says he's offered the job of White House press secretary to his friend and UFC boss Dana White. Trump made that announcement on his social media site. White said Saturday that he plans to meet with Trump on Monday at the White House. No one in the White House immediately confirmed it. Trump was at his Florida golf club on Saturday when he posted that he'd made the offer to “the Great Dana White, a violent Fighter and Warrior” to become the Republican president's chief spokesperson. White, who was in London for a boxing event, said he planned to fly to Washington right after for Monday's meeting. Two police officers who stopped the attacker are hospitalized, with one in critical condition. Leo was traveling to the city of Florida, north of Montevideo, to commemorate the feast of the Virgin of the Thirty-three. Every year, thousands of pilgrims flock to the city to pray before the small wooden icon of the Virgin Mary. Leo is celebrating Mass there before heading to Argentina for the most politically delicate leg of his three-nation South American tour. Trump’s grip on his party is in question as Republicans reel from the midterm wipeout WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans are reeling from the midterm elections and facing a crisis. Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, calls it an “extinction-level event” for the party. Ted Cruz, the Texas senator, compares it to a “Watergate-level repudiation.” The party is divided on how to move forward. Some want to return to fiscal conservatism. Others suggest embracing President Donald Trump’s politics. Trump's role in shaping the party's future is a key question. GOP infighting is expected to intensify, with leadership battles and policy decisions looming. The party must also address its appeal to younger voters and minorities to regain lost ground. U.S. forces have been enforcing a naval blockade on Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route. The last confirmed U.S. strike on a cargo vessel was nearly a month ago.
